As many of you may know, I’m on a slow journey to using more green and clean beauty products. At one point I only used shampoos and conditioners that were formulated without harsh ingredients. I became familiar with the brand Briogeo about 2 years ago from receiving samples in previous Sephora Play-boxes. Briogeo products are vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated without gluten, silicones, DEA, or synthetic dyes.

About a year ago I purchased The BRIOGEO Revive + Repair Duo- Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo and Don't Despair, Repair!™ Deep Conditioning Mask set interested as me it would give me a chance to try out the shampoo and conditioner. The set contained 8 oz/ Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask and 8 oz/ Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo.
I was more so interested in the Scalp Revival Shampoo as it states it great for the following:
- Detoxifies and removes product buildup
- Soothes itchy, irritated, and flaky scalp
- Hydrates the scalp to prevent dryness
How To Use:
Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo:
Apply to wet hair and vigorously massage into the scalp and through to the ends. Rinse and repeat, as necessary.

Backstory…
I have natural hair that would be considered to be of 3C-4A curl texture pattern that is also has low porosity levels. Low porosity hair is known to have cuticles are very compact and not as susceptible to receiving hydration. When hair is considered low porosity, that means that the hair cuticle is flat and closed, making it nearly impossible for moisture to pass through.
I’m usually skeptical with trying out new hair products, especially now since my hair is currently going through the ringer with heat damage. My main objective when searching for new hair products is to look for ingredients that are great at nourishing and moisturizing since my hair has a harder time absorbing moisture.
I’ve had this Briogeo Shampoo and Conditioner set for about a month and have been able to use both several times to the point that I can give a full review, but the review of this post will solely focus on the Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo. The shampoo initially caught my attention as it claimed to remove product build up, cleanse the scalp and provide moisture. I use a lot of products in my hair, therefore finding a shampoo that will clarify, but also add moisture can be a challenge.

The Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo consistency and texture is very much like a light weight pudding. The shampoo smells very minty and when applied to the scalp it has a tingling cooling effect. This effect is due to the blend of peppermint and spearmint oils within the shampoo aimed to reduce scalp itchiness. The tea tree oil is used for its anti-septic and properties that help reduce scalp irritation and inflammation. I often associate these scents with being fresh and free of fragrances.
Prior to using the Scalp Revival Charcoal Shampoo I imagined that it would be drying to the hair and contain exfoliating chunks that may get stuck in my tight coils. Boy was I wrong. I was happy to see that a little of the product went a long way. The tingling effect on the scalp felt relaxing and the minty smell made the experience like a mini aromatherapy session.
As I mentioned, a little of the product goes a long way. I’m pleased to say that the Shampoo provided the same great results even when used with different product lines. The Scalp Revival Shampoo properly cleansed my hair along with keeping it untangled and moisturized. I don’t suffer from dandruff, but I do apply a hefty amount of different oils and gel to my hair. I was happy to see that this shampoo was able to remove product build-up without stripping my hair.
I typically shampoo my hair once a week and I would feel comfortable using this weekly. Moving forward I plan on using the Charcoal Revival shampoo once a week or every other week.
Over the past year I’ve purchased the mini sizes and was able to get about 4 uses out of the 1 oz container. The 1 oz container retails at $11 and the 8 oz retails at $42. Based on these prices, I can only see myself purchasing the smaller size simply due to the fact that I can’t bring my self to pay $42 for one shampoo, unless there was a sale going on at that time. Also my usage of shampoo once to every other week also indicates that it will take me longer to finish the shampoo.
For someone with really long or thick hair and looking to use it more frequently, the full 8 oz size would probably be best for them. I do plan on repurchasing the shampoo when my stock is depleted. But I’ll only be purchasing the 1 oz size.
I’m seriously surprised by this shampoo. I’m surprised to see that a shampoo could work well with so many different hair textures.
If you’re not sure if the shampoo would work for you, I would highly advise checking out your local Sephora since they’re so generous with samples. 1-2 small samples of the shampoo should be a sufficient amount to test out the shampoo.
