What is Squalane Oil? + Why you should be using it!

As someone who has a Normal-Oily skin texture, finding an oil that provides the right level of balance can be quite a challenge. One of the oils that I really enjoy using is Squalane. You may have seen this ingredient mentioned in some of your favorite skincare products. Keep reading to see why and how I use Squalane oil in my routine.

squalane vs squalene

As per Biossance, Squalane comes from Squalene. What many don’t know is that Squalene is part of our skin’s natural moisture. It’s also known to be found in plants and shark liver. As we age, our body loses squalene. It’s known to peak in our teen years and starts to decline once we reach our 20’s. I was surprised to find out that Squalene is unstable in the sense that it spoils quickly when exposed to oxygen and has been known to clog the pores until it’s hydrogenated into the Squalane.

I learned about Squalane a few years back when I was first introduced to the brand Biossance. Through research and use I learned that the best Squalane to use is obviously derived from plants, rice bran, wheat germ and sugar -not shark liver. Many of the Squalane oils on the market are sourced from olives, which could vary the results based on quality of the crop. I happen to really like the Biossance version of the Squalane oil which is derived from renewable sugarcane and known to be highly stable.

Benefits

  • Anti-aging

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Balances oil production

  • Light weight

  • Absorbs quicky into the skin

  • Boosts blood circulation - which promotes the production of collagen

I’ve been using the Biossance Squalane oil on and off for almost two years. The past few weeks I’ve incorporated the Squalane oil into my routine more to see how it compares to the other oils within my collection. Now that I’ve used the oil on a consistent basis, I prefer to use the oil within my morning routine due to it being more light weight. I typically would mix the oil in with my moisturizer or just pat into my skin after my moisturizer. I really like how quickly the oil absorbs into my skin and doesn’t leave me looking overly shiny or too dewy. I don’t mind going to bed oiled up, but it’s definitely not a look I like for during the day.

Being that I enjoy using Squalane oil, I’m looking to incorporate it within more steps of both my Morning and Evening Skincare routine. For the past few months I’ve also enjoyed using the Biossance SQUALANE + PEPTIDE EYE GEL. The eye gel is extremely soothing and moisturizing to the skin of the eye area. It also really helps me combat puffy eyes. I’ve used it both in the morning and night and I feel that it suitable for either time of my routine.
